Will Ohio's $350 million investment reduce car accidents?

The I-75 highway has been a major hotspot of serious and fatal car accidents in Ohio for years.

Major I-75 improvements

Recently, the state has invested millions of dollars into improving safety and reducing crashes. But for those in Northern and Central Ohio, will it be enough?

Over the summer, a group of regional state politicians, traffic safety advocates, and community leaders said reducing traffic congestion would be hampered without a more direct connection between Toledo and Columbus via US Route 23. The group was “shocked” this summer when state transportation officials rejected all six proposals to connect Toledo to Route 23.

“To be suddenly informed that all six were deemed not feasible was incomprehensible at best and seemingly bad politics at worst,” the group said in an open letter to the state.

In the meantime, here’s what you need to know about the I-75 project in the Toledo region.

I-75 upgrades in Northern and Central Ohio

In recent years, I-75 has been recognized as one of the most deadly and dangerous highways in the U.S. – especially during the icy winter months. The roadway stretches from the Great Lakes to Florida.

Last year, I-75 was named the most dangerous highway for truckers nationwide.

In 2019, there were 237 deaths along I-75 –  about 13.3 deaths for every 100 million miles traveled. The national average is about 1.4.

Ohio has an ongoing statewide project to improve I-75. In Northern and Central Ohio, major I-75 construction includes:

  • Widening lanes and bridge replacement I-75, Toledo. The approximately $350 million project to improve safety and reduce crashes began in 2018 and is expected to be completed in 2023. Work includes:
    • Widening and reconstructing between Buck Road and Wales Road.
    • Reducing the curve between Wales Road and Miami Street.
    • Reconstruction of I-75 over Dorr Street, Miami Street, South Avenue/Edwin Drive, and Segur Avenue.
    • New ramps at Collingwood Boulevard/Erie Street.
    • Reconfiguring interchanges with Anthony Wayne Trail (Route 25), South Avenue, and Miami Street.
    • Construction of a new DiSalle Bridge over the Maumee River.
  • Resurface lanes between Napoleon Road and Route 235 in Beaverdam and Bluffton.
  • Replace mainline bridges along I-75 between US 36 and County Road 25A near Piqua.
  • I-75 and County Road 99 interchange improvements. This $33 million project is expected to launch in 2024. State officials are coordinating with Findlay and Hancock County to reconstruct the interchange to better accommodate traffic. Planned upgrades include:
    • Road widening along County Road 99 from west of Technology Drive to east of N Main Street.
    • Constructing a new bridge next to and south of the existing bridge. The plan is expected to finish in 2025 and reduce congestion and crash risk. Right now, the state is procuring the necessary land to build it.
