Summer’s most dangerous period for driving, which goes from Memorial Day to Labor Day, is in full swing. Alarmingly, the Ohio State Highway Patrol identified Franklin County as one of the top five counties with the highest incidence of fatal car accidents involving teenagers within this timeframe.

In light of these alarming statistics, law enforcement officials seized this opportunity to urge young motorists to take precautions when driving on Ohio roads.

How serious are Ohio crashes involving teen drivers?

The Ohio Traffic Safety Office revealed that in 2023, more than 100 fatalities resulted from youth-related vehicular crashes during the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

Ohio State Highway Patrol Sergeant Tyler Ross recounted that on Memorial Day alone in 2023, the state witnessed a staggering 24 fatal crashes that claimed the lives of 26 people.

Additionally, the agency reported that over the past five years, approximately one-third of all fatal crashes occurred during the most dangerous 100 days. Alarmingly, young drivers in Ohio under 24 were involved in just over 30% of all crashes despite comprising only 13% of licensed drivers.

Research conducted by the AAA Foundation revealed that nearly two-thirds of people injured or killed in crashes involving teen drivers were not teenage motorists themselves.

In response, the foundation strongly advocated against reckless behaviors behind the wheel, including speeding, distracted driving, failing to put away cellular devices, and operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
